TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
To best view and use our CourseWare, AVC has adopted the following guidelines:
  • Our course sites work on Windows, Macintosh, and Unix platforms.

  • Connection speed
Although higher-speed connections are preferable, slower connections, should allow users to view most materials on the sites; however, downloading materials will take a longer period of time.
  • Supported Browsers:
AVC CourseWare has tested the course sites with the following browsers:
    • Internet Explorer version 6.0 and later
    • Firefox 2.0 and later
    • Mozilla 1.7 and later
    • Safari version 1.2.2 and later
    • Google Chrome 7.0 and later
    • Due to rapid development in the open source world, there may be other OpenSource software packages that will work as well as of any of those suggested above. We are unable to offer technical support for any of the suggested software. We would be thankful in case you let us know about any complications or bugs you meet during your work time.

Supplemental Tools for Homework Assignments:

  • a digital camera or a scanner
  • a microphone
  • a web camera
  • Videoconferencing
Videoconferencing is required for direct communication with Online Instructor and peers, as well as oral exams.  The Online Instructor uses the ooVoo videoconferencing system and the students can connect to the video conference through their browsers.  Students need to have Java installed and enabled on their computers in order to use web video calls and/or enter video conference rooms. When you install Java, it gets enabled automatically. To check whether you have Java installed please go to the Browser Check (on the bottom of the page).  Then go to the Plug-ins paragraph, click on the link under the Java icon (right icon of the first row) and follow the instructions.
  • Audio recording
Some of lessons require your feedback in the form of sound recorded files. We recommend to use the following free sound recording software:
    • Windows PC
      Go to the link http://www.freesoundrecorder.net/download.htm
Click on it. The download will start and the “FreeSoundRecorder.exe” file will be written on your desktop or Downloads folder. Click on the “FreeSoundRecorder.exe” file. As a result the program will be installed.
Activate the program. The program window will arrive. To start recording click on the red button. The program will ask you the name of the file. Enter it and start speaking into the microphone.
    • MAC
      Go to the link
        http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/mac
There are installation instructions. Install the program.
When sound recording with it please be aware that the program produces two files. You must send both files to your instructor.
Download also “LAME MP3 Encoder” from the same page (scroll down a little the webpage and you will see the link). It is needed for saving files in MP3 format- it will reduce the file size.
